A central concern in Malcolm’s work is his recognition that across the history of western art, cultural exchange has always been crucial; with artists of all disciplines borrowing and repaying both intellectually, aesthetically and spiritually, to enrich and energise their own work.

In 1986, Malcolm travelled alone around Papua New Guinea and this experience has an important influence on the artist’s work. More recently, Malcolm has been designing and making ceramics in Jingdeshen, China for the Pottery Workshop, at the invitation of Takeshi Yasuda and Caroline Cheng. Malcolm was their first artist in residence and has returned annually to design for them and to develop his own ideas.

Malcolm says, “During the making, private memories develop narratives that guide the direction of the work. The pieces are very much the result of these dialogues, leaving the viewer to reinterpret from their own experience. Relics of events that might have been, rights of passage, hints of unseen dramas. Props that witness an unwritten play.”

Malcolm Ross-White has exhibited widely and his work is included in private collections in England, Switzerland, France America, and Japan. He has taught in a number of art colleges, including West Herts, Watford, Goldsmiths, University of Brighton and Bath Spa University, frequently working in the 3D and ceramics departments.
