Richard Bray He works in wood to commission for public and private clients. He has recently completed a major work for the Wellcome Trust and has been commissioned by Jesus College and Lucy Cavendish Colleges, Cambridge. He exhibits at the annual Quenington “Fresh Air” sculpture show and has also shown at the Fine Art Society in London and at the Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh. He teaches at the Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts. The tall works to be shown in 2011 are intended to draw in and engage the observer, the key idea being that the work gradually reveals its complexity. Richard writes the following about these works: "Often there is a visual core that one sees from time to time and which creates a sensation of how the piece holds itself together. These cuts are either focused on one distance from the piece, or encourage the viewer to be more sensitive to their height and position. So, you could say that the work positions the viewer first, actually prioritises the viewer. How much you see depends on how much you look, how much time you spend looking. Seen quickly the wood looks like a raw plank or post. So I am trying to encourage people to be more visually sensitive. I like the idea that you can create movement with a static object. The rhythm created by the interference pattern of the gaps of light visible through the cuts. The way the natural grain of the wood continues through the imposed systems." |
